On June 29, 1987, Officer Rocco DeNote was shot and wounded in the line of duty. Lower Township Officers were dispatched to a residence, just off Breakwater Road on Pine Street, in Fishing Creek, where it was reported that someone inside the home was shooting a shotgun. Police cordoned off the area and surrounded the residence taking up defensive positions. After an approximate nine and a half hour standoff, and failed negotiation attempts, the decision was made to force entry. During the breaching and attempts to enter, the subject fired a series of shots at the officers on the side of the house and in the front of the residence. Officer DeNote, a 10-year department veteran, was struck before the subject fled back inside. Patrol vehicle 121 also had its windshield shattered from the shots. Patrol Officers Brian Dickinson and Russell Douglass, while continuing to receive fire, drug Officer DeNote from the side of the residence to a safe location where he could be medically evacuated. He was immediately transported to Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. A short time later the subject exited the residence with his hands raised after officers exchanged fire and deployed multiple CS gas grenades. He was then arrested on scene with no further incident.
